Made this a few years ago myself. Mostly with my Shopsmith, since we were about to move and I’d sold most of the other tools. Floating tenon (DIY domino, basically) on the joint.

I made this headphone stand a few years ago. It’s been on my desk holding my headphones everyday since.

Originally built this as a quick & dirty standing shelf for an awkward spot when we first moved in, 5 years later finally got round to sorting out the corner where it lived so it became homeless

This is a wing Chung training dummy. Its 50 plus years old. The crack runs down the length of the dummy. It doesn’t move, its still very solid, but we would like to seal the crack to avoid further damage.

These will no longer be taking up space in the knife drawer. They now live two and a half feet above the exact spot they are always used.

Squaring up some table tops. My old BT3000 saw has a sliding table, but the sled is so much nicer. It took about a day to retrofit.

Was bored on Wednesday night so I tried my hand at doing a project w/o measuring or any semblance of a plan. Please note that the different spacing between the shelves is intentional to be able to fit my glasses properly.

Beginner, making my way and learning. It’s not as huge as the photo makes it look. 1st is pine. 2nd one is hardwood and stained darker.

This is my first larger furniture piece and definitely made lots of mistakes between design and execution.

The device in front is a pretty standard tool for slashing dough for baking. I did not like it at all.

This shed door had outlived its functional life and a client wanted it replaced. I asked “Do you want to just get it done or do it right?”

Most of the nuts came out with minimal force, but the last one just spins in place. I tried rubber gloves, painter’s tape, and duct tape to get a better grip. I’d rather not cut a slot in the domed nut if there’s another good strategy.

Researching work benches will often show many examples of the sliding deadman. I opted not to put one on my bench because I valued drawer space more.

These are not my first dovetails but it has been a while since I’ve cut them. This set were not very good but I’ll slow down for the next ones.

$15 at an estate sale, I was definitely prepared to pay more. I’ve seen people finding such cool stuff at secondhand shops and had no luck myself, so I’m hoping I can get some life out of these.

Making some bookeneds by hand.

I found this table on the curb a while back, less the leg hardware. No a relative could use it, and I’m wondering how to fix it up.

I love Rex Krueger’s videos, and I was thinking about his planing stop while cleaning up in the shop when i happened upon my collection of ‘dull and/or burnt reciprocating tool blades that I won’t throw away because who knows’ and it occured to me that these are the same shape, and rough size as a screwdown planing stop, while conveniently fitting over a dog, or using the existing holes to screw it down.

The third step, burnishing the edge, at a slight angle towards the face “turns the burr upwards”. The SEM clearly shows a blade-like bevel has been formed, perpendicular to the card face. However, rather than simply turning the burr, metal has been reformed, and the burr has buckled rather than rotating. Additionally, the burnishing rod has honed the side of the bevel, removing metal just as a honing rod removes metal to restore a knife edge.

I haven’t gotten around to making a nice board with slots for each hone, and for some reason this setup wasn’t obvious to me so I thought I’d share. Front is against a bench dog, back is pressed against the rubber foot of the edge of the bench. It is easy to swap in the different hones, and doesn’t scoot around.

Similar to the one I made in oak, the other piece of hardwood board I had for this project was ash.

I’ve heard people say you can mix sawdust from your workpiece with wood glue to make an invisible patch, but I’ve tried it twice (once in oak, once as pictured on ash) and both times it came out significantly darker and the surrounding wood. The glue is Tite Bond 3.

Outdoor sofa to replace our falling-apart fake-plastic-wicker one, reusing the same cushions.

Hell of a good read this, can recommend (even for a millimetre-y Brit like myself) Although it’s making me want to get back to the workshop rather than enjoy the holiday 😆

Walnut and acrylic.

Tuning pegs for musical instruments are commonly made from ebony or boxwood, but in medieval times and renaissance they would also be made from roasted maple. Maple is a relatively soft wood, so the trick is to roast it, which makes it very light and porous, and then let it soak in a mixture of linseed oil and turpentine overnight. It soaks the oil in like a sponge, going from swimming on the surface to sinking to the ground when it’s saturated. The oil hardens and reinforces the wood, kind of like epoxy stabilised wood.

I’ve posted the lower cupboard before, but here we have the (almost) finished hutch attached. I’m going to let the urethane cure for a day or two before I install the glass.

Finally finished the case! Editing took longer than expected, finding time in between, work, being a parent and the rest of life is not the easiest. But luckily I used to play Tetris as a child.

Here’s a simple box I just finished. Cherry with dovetailed corners.

Put together a little box for the accessories that go with my dovetail jig. Out of poplar and of course with dovetail joinery.

I have been working on a design for a stand for my 20 gallon aquarium to sit on. Each side of a square is 2 inches long in my diagrams. Pocket hole joints are indicated by double arrows, while the lil box thingies are L brackets. I plan to attach the top to the legs using figure 8 brackets.

This was my first time turning boxwood. I wanted to upgrade the handle of my espresso machine’s portafilter. I’m really pleased with how smooth it turned out! Should I coat the boxwood, or is it fine as is?

Or at least, a side table. What is the process of doing that? I have basic hand tool for working on some other small project, a small circular saw(that attached to a marble cutter), and an electric planer, what else would i need?

I’m taking an ash tree down on my property next week and I’m gonna build a work bench with it. I want it to be a hefty boy, so I’m going the roubo route.

This time I’m trying something a little different. I’m making a phone case, and by me I actually mean me with the help of my brother. My Brother recently got him self a CNC machine, that means I got a CNC machine. Just so happens I also recently got a new phone. A fairphone 5, and since I lack self control, and that little voice that goes “you cant do that”. I decided to try and make my own phonecase out of wood.

The last one went commando, this one’s got drawers on.

A few years back I bought a big jug of Titebond2 glue, figuring it’d last me a decade fulfilling my occasional need to make some wood stick together better than nails or pocket holes. I store it on my back porch, which is indoors but only gets climate control from the blower return in the room, so the room hovers between about 50F (10C) and 90F (32C) depending on the season.

The box is made from reclaimed wood, and she is super happy with it.

Does anyone else whittle? Johnny Layton is an amazing teacher. His video on sharpening led me to cutting paper with my knife for the first time in my life. Finally having a sharp knife has made whittling more fun

I foreshadowed this one pretty good. I’m still working on the countertop but the cabinetry is done.

First router project. My family had a trivet like this when I was growing up, and I wanted to recreate it. Made from a scrap end of an oak board.

Came with an L bracket I was using to put planters on a fence.

It’s a little scratch and dent given it’s made out of offcuts, scraps and extras from other projects but I think it came out okay. Three coats of fake “tung oil” finish and it came up to a nice warm semi-gloss, and ambered up the pine enough to take the edge off the grain.

This sign hangs on my basement shop door. I didn’t know Don personally. I think he was the first husband of the lady we bought our house from before he passed away. I’ve never seriously considered removing it. I don’t know why exactly. I guess it feels sort of symbolic.

I’m slapping together a night stand for my cousin out of crap I have lying around the shop, and I’m using the project as an excuse to try out some stuff.
