Top of the Food Chain

Top of the Food Chain

From Diana Rafferty Yatson

I arrived at this Great Horned owl nest just before sunrise hoping to catch mom bringing in prey from her evening hunt. It was still dark so I adjusted my camera settings, lowered my shutter speed to 1/60s, held my camera as steadily as I could and waited.

After a few moments, mom flew in with a nice large meal of what appears to be a hawk. Mom stayed with the owlets for a few minutes before flying off.

I was thrilled to be able to witness this moment and capture some images of this Great Horned owl securing its place at the top of the food chain!
