Site: We noticed that you are blocking our ads.

Me: That’s right.

Site: But that’s how we pay for this content. Will you disable your ad-blocker?

Me: No. My ad blocker is how I stop you from spying on me.

Site: But we’re not spying on you.

Me: Then how did you know I’m blocking your ads?

I have to say I only half agree; my adblocker is for both: prevent spying AND block ads.

Some comments:

Ads that use my compute power, on whatever device, to run an auction between 23000 or whatever providers to decide which ad they shove in my face.

Get tae fuck.

The fun thing is that if they went back to putting static ads inline with their html content, there’d be no way for us to block them because our browser/agents wouldn’t know which is an ad vs. a legitimate page resource.

(I see that sometimes and do a double take, but then I breathe out and relax)

As we all know:

  • adblockers don’t magically recognize ads
  • it’s all (99%) based on recognizing known (sub.)domains that serve the javascript that does above mentioned brokering with wherever your mouse hovers right now and whatever else data they can get about you
  • that’s a gigantic industry … bla bla bla, but here’s what I’m getting at:

Instead of changing that system to defy adblockers once and for all, they are blocking adblockers, trying to force its users into submission.

This means that

  • the ad system as it is works as desired, i.e. the losses due to adblockers are less than minimal
  • what they’re really afraid of is that more endpoints start using adblockers (I guess that is what’s really happening, albeit slowly).

FUCK. THAT. SHIT. Work on changing it instead of bending people to a broken system. I promise, y’all may remain capitalist pigs.

Ask yourself if you really, really must see the page that is throwing up shit like that. No alternative in the whole wide interweb? In my experience, the answer is NO in 99.9% of all cases.

True. I wouldn’t be nearly as dedicated to block ads, if they weren’t so fucking obnoxious.

In the way they try to invade your attention, the obviously malicious ways they want to manipulate your feelings and how they shamelessly use YOUR ressources to do so!

Every ad network runs a lot of ads that are simply trying to scam you. Ads for Malware. Ads for shady medicine. Ads for gambling. Ads for frauds. I do not want to be scammed, I like my money.

My adblocker does not really block ads.

It just takes care not to invite them on my device.
