Hytale is OUT NOW in early access!

cross-posted from: https://piefed.ca/c/hytale/p/450908/hytale-is-out-now-in-early-access

Note: Not my screenshot

It’s been over 7 years since the game was announced, and after being cancelled by Riot and bought back by the original devs, against all odds it is FINALLY playable!

The game was supposed to come out in an hour but it seems the devs released it early. I’ll wait and see some early gameplay but it looks like I might buy it on launch day. Feels surreal that the wait is finally over.

With zero user reviews of the EA, and no reviewer info out there at all.

They already talk about taking a % fee from private servers and mod sales, and they are hyper-aggressive about moderation. This is targeting the roblox crowd by the looks of it’s aggressive focus on mtx/paid experiences while sidestepping publisher fees like steam.

Israeli Overwolf payment processor too. Fuck that.

It has always been a pile of shit anyway, but yeah.

Definitely worth waiting for reviews, but I’m sure they’ll come out soon.

FWIW all mtx will be cosmetics only, with the good news that there’s no restrictions on mods changing how you look. Their EULA also disallows any pay-to-win mtx in servers similar to Minecraft.

The lead dev backtracked on paid mods (at least for now), saying he’s looking into having quick access to donating instead. I wouldn’t say it’s anything near Roblox territory.

Yeah, with an attitude like that I’ll sure as hell not buy outside of Steams customer protections. Too bad

I believe their user agreement said something about waiving the right to refund when I checked it out last night as well.

Their refund policy allows refunds if bought in less than 14 days and played less than 4 hours: https://support.hytale.com/hc/en-us/articles/45119888587163-Refund-Policy-and-Available-Payment-Methods

Well you never know, I could be wrong. I’m just cynical after so many experiences over the years.

I used to preorder stuff. I’ve been burned so hard. I look at Lost Epoch as a comparison closest to a game like Hytale though. Early videos do look shiny so far because downloads started ~45 minutes early. They need to keep landing sales though for revenue to be worth it with a team of 50+

The skin crowd is already going nuts. (Why would you pay $50 on skins for a $20 game again? in a game with modding support and gear that changes your appearance… just why? lol - i’ve never been the spend thousands of dollars on skins guy though. Probably $20 in guild wars 2 over a decade for a couple mount skins that have no free options..)

How dare they defy our daddy gaben

Don’t get me wrong, I hate steam because it inevitably will be a problem after some amount of years.

On the hytale side though, they literally aren’t on steam for the reason in a recent news article on their site:

This doesn’t mean Hytale will never be on Steam; right now, we don’t see the need for it, as we want to keep our launch closer to our community. It’s important to note that Steam currently doesn’t support some of our modding features; we will be in contact with Valve in the near future to see what’s possible.

Reading between the lines, with the emphasis i’ve added… the “modding features” they don’t support are paid mods. They want that creator club / roblox experience ASAP.

Yes, the whole reason they started on this game 11 years ago is because Mojang banned a whole bunch of MTX. Hypixel lost a lot revenue because of it (good, literally exploiting children) and went to make their own game.

Hytale will be drowned in MTX eventually.

I read about that and forgot about it. I knew riot picked these guys up for a while but that’s it.

The goal is monetization. It’s another minecraft clone… there’s so many amazing minecraft mods that don’t ask for your money and run on potato pcs (and have options that scale up to top tier gaming pcs) so I don’t know who this is really for, beyond someone just looking for shiny new toys.

Comments from other communities

I’m excited, I don’t know a lot about it but I think the voxel survival genre has a lot of room for new ideas. Let’s see if they hit any good ones!

I wouldn’t be excited. The reason Hytale exists in the first place is because Mojang blocked server microtransactions which effectively killed the income of the Hypixel server. They’re also planning paid mods, paid cosmetics and minigame MTX (whatever the fuck that means). I think there’s a legitimate concern that the game is going to end up heavily monetized and it’s going to turn into a meta-game platform like Roblox.

But if your want to be excited about Minecraft “clones” there are other choices. If you’re looking for something more action related there’s Allumeria which is aiming to be like a 3D Terraria. It’s not out yet but there’s early access planned for 2026. And if you’re looking for more a more survival experience there’s Vintage Story. I will 100% recommend Vintage Story to anyone wanting an actual survival game and not just survival elements that turn into mindless busywork 1 hour into the game. There’s so much work that goes into almost everything you do in Vintage Story but you’ll feel so rewarded for putting in the effort. You can spend a whole year in game and every in game day have a goal for the day.

I fear that early access will kill this. Sure it will provide some money that might pay for the rest of the development, but streamers will play it now - der that it is literally work in progress in vast parts and maybe take another look once it finally releases, but the hype will be gone at the release.

For this game it was either this or the game never released at all though

“The hype will be gone argument” seems irrelevant.
This is not some live-service games.
They don’t really need to be continuous growfth of fans.
Almost all games with continous growth have some predatory system.

As long their business is sustainable, they can finish continue their journey even when things get dip a bit.

I might play this game, but only months or even year later. Its too hyped right now, and i want to see if it will actually be good after some time.

After so many years of development drama and criticism surrounding Hypixel themselves even before they actively worked on this… I think I‘m good. Playable doesn‘t mean you will get the full experience for a one time payment. Hypixel live and breathe live service.

What kind of game is it? Is it like Minecraft/roblox as the screenshot suggests?

I would guess it‘s probably closer to Roblox or modern Minecraft. Hypixel started the project to have a constant money flow so expect monetization left and right.

It’s basically Minecraft but with a bigger focus on RPG elements, exploration, and combat. It’s a safe bet that if you like MC you’ll enjoy this.

If they fixed their damn payment processor I’d buy it. I’ve tried several methods and they all fail.

Worked for me just now.

Tebux or whatever the fuck it’s called charged me FIVE TIMES before letting the payment through, I’ve filed a complaint with them because holy scam, but I’m hoping the charges will just go away, since they’re still pending

Back in my day games were finished before they were released.

A little ironic to post this on a game inspired by Minecraft, the most prolific example of an early access model working out.

But Minecraft - even in the Beta days - worked as a complete game. They have been improving (depending on how you like the changes) on it since, but it wasn’t ever filled with literal work in progress signs like Hytale is…

Yes, but Minecraft was on sale for a year before it ever went into “Beta,” back before it was in Alpha even. In fact, it wasn’t until one of the last Alpha updates that the earliest semblance of “Minecraft” as we know it really began to appear. The Beta updates added a lot of core features we take for granted in the game, like beds for sleeping, tall grass for seeds, redstone repeaters, pistons, sprinting, hunger, etc.

The first purchasable version of Minecraft I remember didn’t even have a working health bar.

Notch sold the game to Microsoft long before it was ever a complete game. Why program something when you can sell players on an idea and then sell that idea to Microsoft?

Notch sold the game to Microsoft long before it was ever a complete game.

I know it’s a bit fuzzy with Minecraft since it’s constantly getting updates, but I find the claim that Minecraft was “incomplete” before selling it to Microsoft is a big stretch.

Version “1.0” came out 3 years before the Microsoft sale, and at least to me, the game felt “complete” long before 1.0

They still haven’t delivered on the finite water promise.

From what I’ve gleaned from the history of this project, the original creator of the game sold the IP to a publisher in order to secure money and resources for further development, where they promptly started interfering with development to the point that it was delayed and ultimately cancelled.

The creator bought the rights back from them and released it into Early Access so that they can fund its development.

I personally have nothing against early access games after playing other EA games like Factorio, Rimworld, and Satisfactory that were known for being incredible experiences long before they launched into 1.0.

This is one of the few times I’m ok with a game releasing early. It was in Dev hell for a long ass time only to get nearly canned until it was reacquired. If it can get the support it needs to achieve the dev’s vision, I’m ok with that.

And they have made it extremely clear what kind of state the game is in.

And they were a lot simpler, and there was a lot less competition. Nowadays, games are everywhere and hype doesn’t last long. No hype, less sales, even though the game is great and released in the final version

for me, hype = don’t buy it

I’m typically not a fan of what the masses flock too. it’s usually bland, shallow and meme-esq. the more people that use a thing, the less quality is put into it I find. this goes for anything from travel destinations, to frying pans to games to restaurants.

heh, I feel like there are some good games out there, even though they’re trendy

Most trending games I’ve seen seem great. Most of them aren’t my time, so I don’t play them

They might just not be your type

Exciting! Can’t wait to try it out.

Love that it has Linux support.

I’ve been looking at it from afar and it’s nice to see some people trying to innovate upon the Minecraft formula ; though in this case I think the Hypixel people and I enjoy different things about Minecraft.

I poked around with it for a bit and 3 hours vanished… Yeah, this one might replace luanti for me once its done

Not on steam, not on my radar.

I love steam as much as the next guy but monopolies are bad and we should support other businesses when we can. When Gabe dies who knows what happens to all the steam games you “own”

Agree to that, bought games like Factorio and Vintage Story straight from the developer instead of through steam. It does help when the game natively supports Linux, if it doesn’t then yeah Steam it is.

My grocery store is a monopoly, the products in it aren’t.

I don’t want to shop at 1000 different stores that will all sell my information to brokers. If you do, that’s fine, shopping around gets cheaper prices but you pay with your time.

I’ll keep shopping at the one store.

Does your grocery store sell licenses for the products you buy? I don’t think the grocery store can take away the food you buy there if they simply decide to do so.

All the more reason to choose a ‘grocer’ you trust rather than a fly-by-night online store.

Hasn’t the game been in “early access” for like a decade? I heard that the dev went AWOL for years and now just decided to come back. I think I’m gonna pass on this one, been burned on too many times buying games for their “potential”.

No, this is the first time it has been available to the public. It was acquired by Riot Games several years into development, they decided to scrap most of the original work and start over in a new game engine, work on the new engine severely delayed reimplementation of previously completed features, which kept pushing the release timeline back, and eventually Riot canned the project.

Last year the original founder purchased the rights to the game from Riot, they went back to the original engine, and they got a working early access build out in like six months.

More minecraft shit?

Depending on how said shit is done, could be better than Minecrft.
