Comic strip with 5 panels. Gabe Newell from Valve Software says "I made a controller that screams" to an engineer or scientist. They look at the steam controller screaming. The other person asks "Why?". Gabe looks perplexed in the next two panels.

How to really find friends by interests?

Community iconc/nostupidquestions@lemmy.world by
pixeldaemon@sh.itjust.works

I lack friends to discuss interests with. I want to study programming but have no peers in the field. They say “Hang around five billionaires, and you’ll become the sixth”, and I believe this statement is a crucial thing about personal development. Networking is not my strong point, and communities often gatekeep unexperienced newbies. So, how do I actually find interest-based buddies?

What's it like sleeping in (on?) a submerged submarine?

Community iconc/asklemmy@lemmy.world by
printf("%s", name);@piefed.blahaj.zone
they/them 36 minutes ago

I might be a little too claustrophobic to go on a ride myself, although I have never tried. And I feel immense respect towards people that do serve onboard submarines. With all my claustrophobia, I have this positive prejudice that it must be amazingly cosy to sleep onboard: feeling slight motions as the submarine moves, hearing the engine hum, having a “sleepover” with people you trust with your life…

My chest is tight, my brow is furrowed, I’m combative, I’m scared. It sucks.

Occasionally i hear the phrase “there is no morality outside of human society”. I believe, what is meant by it, is that you cannot say whether something is morally right or wrong in nature, if it isn’t part of human society.

Back in the early 1990s we didn’t have YouTube or Discord or Twitch to help us make informed game purchases, we just had to read reviews in magazines or buy games based on kick ass cover art, which is exactly what I did with this. I never played the first 3 and I think there were more after this one. Sega’s answer to Nintendos R-Type series. Again it was faster, crazier and turned everything up to 11 in the side scrolling shooter genre. I think there was also a 2 player option. The music was ace and the bosses were absolute bastards. I also spent a long time trying to draw the ship. I think this was called something else in the USA, Lightning Force maybe?
